Match Report for game against Trinant

26/04/2012

Tuesday Night saw Usk entertain Trinant under the Red Shed Meadow floodlights in a rearranged fixture. Usk were again indisciplined at the start and the visitors were soon on the board with a penalty kick. Usk started to get into the game when first speed merchant Joe Edwards crossed for a try and then bulldozing Jon Matthews added a second. This lead did not last long when Trinant scored a try and a converted try. Joe Edwards then scored his second try of the night to overtake Emlyn Jones as the Club's leading try scorer for the season and this levelled the scores. Trinant added a second penalty to retake the lead. On the stroke of half time Richard Heyden drove over for a try to give Usk a slender half time lead.

Early in the second half the lead changed hands again when Trinant scored their third try of the night. Usk then thought they had regained the lead when Joe Edwards sped along the touchline to touch down in the corner but although the referee initially awarded the try, the Trinant touch judge indicated he had gone into touch and the referee ruled out the score. However, Usk hit a purple patch just before the end when Dan Vella went over to score and then Jon Matthews scored his second of the night. Unusually for Usk both tries were converted by YoYo Williams and Dan Vella and Usk ran out the victors by 34-23.

The game was marred in two ways, firstly Trinant arrived without a front row and passive scrums were the order of the day and Usk's forward power was nullified. Secondly, midway through the second half speed merchant Joe Edwards pulled up as he was accelerating through the visitor's defence with a torn hamstring .
